My name’s John, I was a professional freeskier for a long time, now I’m a data scientist. This site has a little about me and the work I’ve done.
Background
I grew up in Vermont and spent most of my ski career in Salt Lake City, Utah while attending the University of Utah. I did contests like the FIS slopestyle World Championships and XGames Realski and once stunt-doubled for Vin Diesel in a Hollywood Film.
In my late 20s I went back to school to get a Master's in Computer Science, focusing on AI and Machine Learning and interned for NASA along the way at the Armstrong Flight Research Center.
When I'm not focused on the DS/ML world I spend most of my freetime now surfing and playing with my dog.

Work at Scribd
In January 2022, I began working for Scribd, an ebook and audiobook subscription platform with hundreds of millions of documents across numerous languages. As a data scientist on a user-centered platform with a variety of content mediums, I've focused on building production systems that leverage Natural Language Processing and Large Language Models to enhance search, discovery, and content quality. My work spans the full ML lifecycle—from prototyping generative AI applications and training custom models, to building distributed inference pipelines and implementing agentic RAG architectures that process our 100M+ document corpus. Through projects in document summarization, search query correction, SEO optimization, and recommendation systems, I've shipped features that directly impact revenue and user experience while establishing scalable ML infrastructure.
